John Ripper Tenor Sax / Baritone Sax
John started on the alto sax shortly before his National Service as a result of wanting to join his brother’s band. His first paid gig earned him 7 shillings (35p)! However, because live music was in demand, gigs came in and John found plenty of work and got to know many musicians. In due course, John expanded his skills to include clarinet and flute and the full range of saxes. After a period working as a musician on ships and in other contexts, the disco started to take the place of live bands and it became more difficult to get work. Fortunately John was able to add teaching to his musical skills and became a peripatetic music teacher in North London. Since moving to Malvern in 2007, John has appeared regularly with MBB, playing lead tenor or baritone sax as required. He has also appeared with the Perdido Street Jazz Band and Abbey Jazz.
